Buhari Reverses Decision To Be Petroleum Minister
There are strong indications that President Muhammadu Buhari
has reversed his decision to take up the petroleum ministerial position.
This indication came from Femi Adesina, the presidential spokesman, who gave the impression that the reversal was to separate the office of the President from that of petroleum ministry, Vanguard reports.
Bloomberg, yesterday, October 12, quoted Adesina as saying: “He cannot be president and oil minister at the same time. He will supervise the ministry, so there will be no petroleum minister. Maybe he will appoint a Minister of State.”
There are speculations however, that the reversal of the decision may be due to threat from some senators who reportedly insisted that the president must submit himself for screening with other nominees in line with the constitution.
This is coming barely two weeks after Femi Adesina, the presidential spokesman told international media that President Buhari would take the position.
Recall that on Tuesday, September 29, during the Global Leaders’ Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism in New York, Buhari had appointed himself as the petroleum minister.
In reaction, The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state said President Buhari decided to appoint himself as petroleum minister to protect the sector from massive looting which was the norm in past administrations.
Buhari helped establish the NNPC in 1977 as oil minister under military government of General Olusegun Obasanjo. He was later in charge of the Petroleum Trust Fund during the time of General Sani Abacha in the 1990s.
