The latest tests results suggest exposure to cosmic rays poses the greatest risks.

Samsung’s awful smartphone launch is a holiday gift to Google

Image
As the world watches Samsung deal with the fallout from what could be the worst smartphone launch in recent memory, there should be a smile on faces at Google headquarters. Samsung is a crucial Google partner for its Android mobile operating system. Indeed, Android and Samsung have become almost synonymous for many consumers these days — something that Google may not particularly want for its open mobile operating system. So perhaps to shift that perception, Google is trying to stake its own claim to being the premier Android brand with its recent introduction of its Pixel and Pixel XL. [Google moves into hardware production with smartphone and other devices] Google is moving on the high-end smartphone world at a good time. Samsung, the world's top-selling smartphone maker, is dealing with a potentially brand-crushing crisis. First its new, top-of-the-line Galaxy Note 7 phones caught on fire; now the replacement ones are reportedly exploding,...

Verizon says it's examining the impact of the 2014 hack on the company it's spending $4.8 billion to buy.

Image
Verizon is investigating whether a massive hack on Yahoo in 2014 had a "material impact" on the company, suggesting it might seek to renegotiate the terms of its $4.8 billion acquisition. Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam called the company "a real value asset" during a technology conference on Monday, according to The Wall Street Journal. But he went on to caution: "In fairness, we are still understanding what was going on and defining whether it was a material impact on the business or not. "We are looking at this in great detail -- that is about all you can say until you finish the investigation," he said at the Internet Association's Virtuous Circle conference in Menlo Park, California. McAdam's comments come less than a week after the New York Post reported that Verizon is seeking a $1 billion discount on the deal as a mountain of recent bad press casts a shadow on Yahoo. Last week, it was reported that the US government had Ya...

As we head into the last two seasons of Game of Thrones , speculation about how the HBO show will end is rampant. Among the questions being discussed is: Who is the Lord of Light? Some fans believe Bran Stark is this deity, and there is a fair amount of evidence to support this theory. Let’s take a look. First, what role does the Lord of Light play in Game of Thrones ? Why do we care? Consider this from a GOT wiki on Fandom. “While the Faith of the Seven believes in Seven Heavens and Seven Hells, in the Lord of Light religion the current world that everyone lives in now is considered to be ‘hell’, the only hell, but the Lord of Light will save his faithful adherents from this darkness.”

The Game of Thrones Live Concert is Coming

Image
When HBO hit series Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi announced in August that he would be taking the show's music on tour, he described the upcoming live concerts as immersive experiences. He wasn't joking. Kansas City will be the first stop on the tour with begins Feb. 15, 2017. The tour will ultimately make 28 stops across the US and Canada. Djawadi will conduct an 80-piece orchestra and choir in the round. Wall screens of LED screens and other 3D designs will rise from the stage floor. This experience looks epic, just like the television show.

China has complicated feelings about Japan winning so many Nobel Prizes

Japan is a country that never strays far from China’s mind. This time, Chinese people are asking how it is possible that Japan has won so many more Nobel Prizes than China. Japanese biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine this year. The prize was won by Chinese pharmacologist Tu Youyou in 2015. But Japan has now won 25 Nobel Prizes since 1949, and China only three—including the Peace Prize to human rights activist Liu Xiaobo in 2010, which sparked an ongoing diplomatic freeze between Norway and China. Japan has won the second-most science Nobel prizes after the US.

Samsung is suspending production of the Galaxy Note 7, says Korean news agency

Image
Samsung is suspending production of the Galaxy Note 7 after a number of replacement phones, those that Samsung claimed were safe after a recall caught fire and sent at least one person to the hospital. The report comes from the Korean news agency Yonhap. The New York Times corroborates the news citing a person familiar with the production stoppage. The halt in production is said to be in cooperation with safety regulators in the US, China, and Korea, according to Yonhap. The news comes in the middle of the second presidential debate in the United States, making it appear like a incredibly opportunistic news dump, however, it is early Monday morning in Korea where Samsung is headquartered. It’s also possible that Samsung’s top management addressed the issue first thing Monday morning. At least five replacement Note 7 phones caught fire in the US alone this week, and several of Samsung’s carrier partners announced they would stop selling the phones entirely.

10 things rich people know that you don’t

People don’t become wealthy by accident, here’s how they do it As a financial adviser, I have occasionally found myself feeling envious of certain clients. Not because of their wealth — but because they were disciplined and determined enough to do all the right things that enabled them to accumulate their wealth and, in many cases, retire early. Despite my expertise, I, like a lot of people, sometimes struggle not to do the wrong things that make being rich, let alone retiring at all, a pipe dream. Financially responsible and successful people don’t build their wealth by accident — or overnight. Becoming rich takes serious willpower and long-term vision. You have to be able to keep your eye on the prize of financial freedom, be willing to sacrifice your present wants for the sake of your future and develop good habits to win. Here are 10 habits you can start putting into practice now.
